One of the UK's top experts on hair transplant treatment has warned that men must think about the long-term when they are considering having a transplant.

Writing for The Telegraph newspaper, Dr Darren McKeown said that due to the progressive nature of male pattern baldness, having a hair transplant at fairly young age may only mean having to have much more of the treatment as the hair loss progresses.

Dr McKeown, who has offices both in Glasgow and on London's Harley Street, said that men need to be aware of how their balding may progress through the seven stages of the official Norwood scale of hair loss, named after the American dermatologist, Dr O’Tar Norwood, who first set it out in the Seventies.

The scale ranges from a full head of hair at stage one, then a phase of thinning hair to finally, a horseshoe-shaped band at the back and sides at stage seven.

"A man who is at stage three in his early twenties may well get an excellent result from a hair transplant at the time, but he could be destined for class seven in his forties, leaving him with a ludicrous island of transplanted hair at the front and a bald area behind," Dr McKeown warned.

"Aside from technical ability, one of the most important skills of any hair-transplant surgeon lies in making the decision when to operate, and when to say no."
