The noticeably thicker head of hair sported by television host, Declan Donnelly, at the National Television Awards last week was not down to an expensive hair transplant, apparently, but something significantly cheaper.

The 36-year-old popular prime-time host has taken some steps to tackle his thinning thatch, according to friend, but they only go as far as a mix of special one-a-day tablets of hair growth chemical and a thickening shampoo.

His thicker hair was immediately noticeable to fans and observers at last week’s awards, but the presenter did nothing to deny his efforts to retain the youthfulness for which he is famed – in fact, he embraced it.

"Declan has certainly not had a transplant. He knows his hairline is receding and has taken some steps to tackle it. There are all sorts of remedies out there you can get, including tablets and shampoos,” the source said. “He’s not exactly kept it a secret. He was even joking about it at the NTAs as people he hadn’t seen for a while had noticed the change.”

Donnelly is likely to have tried – and is possibly taking – Propecia, the £1-a-day slimming pill that enhances the prevention of hair loss in men and also helps to reverse the balding process.
