Women can experience hair loss, just like men, if they go through particularly stressful periods, according to researchers.
Dr Rebecca Euwer, a dermatologist from Dallas has found that women can
lose up to half their hair after stressful situations such as death in
the family, childbirth or surgery. Although this type of stress-related
hair loss can also be seen in men, women are the most common sufferers,
says Euwer.
She explains that some 90% of hair is in the growing phase, while the
remaining hair is in the resting phase where it remains for three
months before it falls out. Stressful situations can ‘shock’ the hair
follicles into the resting phase, which leads to them eventually
falling out.
Euwer says it is important to seek advice if you start to notice hair
loss, “about 1 percent of your hair is falling out, so it's normal to
lose about 100 hairs a day," she said. But when you begin to notice
more hair on your pillow or in your shower drain, it's time to go to
the doctor.”
She explains that although women can suffer from male-pattern baldness,
which affects the top of the head only, stress-related hair loss is easy
to spot as it also affects the sides of the head.
