In late October journalists were invited to L’Oreal’s research centre in Clichy where the firm’s research communications director Patricia Pineau told them that women would be able to reverse their greying hair within ten years.
L’Oreal invested £581 million in hair colour research last year, which is double the amount invested by any of the firm’s competitors. Now, this investment seems to have paid off with the firm claiming to have developed a revolutionary treatment for returning grey hair to its original hue.
Pineau wasn’t giving too much away. She simply stated, 'when hair goes grey, there is a progressive disappearance of the melanocytes from the hair. While there are still melanocytes in the hair, there is still hope that it could be re-pigmented.' She added that the treatment should be available within ten years and that it is likely to involve an oral element along with a range of haircare products.
The research team also spoke about their new ammonia-free hair colourant which, the firm claims, actually improves the condition of the hair through each dye. In fact it can restore the hair to its sleek, un-dyed conditioned after several uses. This is great news for people who find their hair thins and breaks as a result of hair dying, which can even cause hair loss in some users.
