An American company dedicated to researching and developing hair loss treatment has grown a pot of $7.5 million in an equity financing round to finance its future efforts.

The information about Massachusetts-based Follica Inc. was detailed in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The biotechnology company is a leading specialist in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, a male and female pattern hair loss, and other hair loss disorders.

Follica co-founder and PureTech Ventures managing director Daphne Zohar said, "We sort of have activities in multiple places. A lot of potential customers are wondering why Follica isn't saying more, but things are still in the development phase." She did confirm, however, that "things are moving quickly."

Follica was founded as a joint venture by PureTech Ventures and dermatologists from Harvard University, the University of California at San Francisco and the University of Pennsylvania.
It raised a Series B financing round in August 2008, generating $11 million.

The company has generated significant buzz among those seeking hair loss remedies, with significant interest in the firm’s approach of generating new follicles to grow shoots of hair. Its technology, which is licensed from the University of Pennsylvania, could also be used to deliver permanent removal of unwanted hair.
